I'll start with this is my first time reading Liz Tomforde. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had great characters and an easy-to-follow to follow the plot. I didn't think it strayed very far from what I would consider a typical contemporary romance though, but her writing and character development were great and more than enough to satisfy my tastes because I am a romance reader, albeit usually suspense romance, so it is different in that way.
Mile High follows Stevie Shay (aka Vee), a Chicago NHL team jet flight attendant. And of course that includes Evan Zanders (aka EZ or Zee) and the two of them get off to a rough start.
Tomforde does an amazing job solidifying her descriptions of these two people. Both have confidence issues, albeit stemming from different things. Stevie has definite body dysmorphia issues and struggles with them throughout. While Zanders has clear issues with his feelings about loving and trusting people, and you do learn that he has been seeing a therapist. However, these feelings impact his relationship with Stevie.
As romance goes, it was a touch on the long side, and at times, I felt like I was being told the same things over and over again. One such example is the story of how Zanders and his best friend Maddison came to be on the same hockey team. I'm pretty sure that story was told three or maybe four times in the book. It wasn't necessary. Once that was established, it shouldn't have been told again in Zanders's head.
I also found that the intimacy moment between Stevie and Zanders came too early, especially considering the book was 480 pages long. It hit at about the 100-page mark. It was like the "chase" was over and then you sit there and just know that at some point they are bound to break up because that was just too easy. It was a bit too predictable and one of the few things that I felt brought the book down to a 4-star for me. I'd even say that it was maybe more around a 3.75 but I'll stick with 4 :)
Either way, I surprisingly enjoyed the story ... and I say surprisingly because I'm usually not a fan of sports romances, but I liked these two people a lot and I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. I also really liked all of the supporting characters.
Even down to the last line in the book ... which I will not share because you have to read the book!!! HAHAHAHA
