Dress Codes for Small Towns by Courtney C. Stevens
2.0

I'll start out by saying that I don't usually read contemporary, mostly because these "snapshot of life" books don't really do it for me. While not all contemporary subscribes to this, this book definitely does. If you like miraculous, extraordinary, character-shoved-into-a-new-world stories, then this book probably isn't for you.

This is a story about a girl confused about her feelings for her friends in a small, Christian town. I loved that this book explored sexuality and gender, but I don't think it did it enough. I especially think that this book could have been improved if the sexual issues the main character, Billie, struggled with were more in dialogue with her Christian beliefs. Christianity seemed like a huge part of her life with her father being a preacher and all, but she mentioned her relationship with God maybe three times throughout the novel.

In all honesty, I really feel the main fault of this book was how incredibly boring it was. The exciting parts were the few times where her relationships with her friends were taken to the next level, which I won't spoil. Even these aspects were never resolved at the end of the novel. After all of these questions that Billie had about herself and who she wanted to be with, it would've been nice to have some sort of answer to all the questions throughout the whole thing.

I think contemporary lovers would enjoy this book, but I found myself so excited to be done with it that I almost cheered when it was over. It definitely wasn't bad, just not the book for me.
