Circus Mirandus
by Cassie Beasley
Any mention of circus in a book and I'm sold. I don't care who the intended audience is or the genre. I want it. Which is what let to Circus Mirandus being a little disappointing for me. The majority of this book doesn't actually take place in the circus. HOWEVER, that didn't take away my enjoyment and it built up perfectly for a sequel. The book worked exactly the way it needed to - not as much circus as we'd probably expect or want but setting it up perfectly for what the sequel can bring - and it also touched on some important topics such as toxic family members (with an explanation as to why!!) as well as grief and it also had a great friendship.
This was fun and enjoyable but still very grounded in the real world with good messages and themes for kids to explore and I will definitely pick up more by Cassie Beasley.
(personal rating: 3 stars.
critical rating - if I were reading as a child not an adult: 4 stars)
