There are some things I'd like more explained and contextualized in the world building. I had no idea when this was even taking place.. the author made it seem like it was modern day, but there was no modern technology mentioned aside from cars and digital cameras. While that's not the most important thing in regards to the story, I was trying to orient myself in the world and honestly couldn't.

It feels a lot like Hunger Games, but with cool magic. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I'd like more of an in depth look at how their magic functions bcs I'm kinda in the dark about shit like that so I feel less invested in the spell building and casting. Like they're talking about being able to craft and cast high level spells but there's no indication as to what that takes. Practice? Finesse? One person mentioned "oh you need to switch the places of these on the crafting board, but that seems pretty basic stuff, but how would I know that without any context?

The things I mentioned above just bugged me throughout and kept pulling me out of the story. Still looking forward to book 2 even tho I saw the twist coming from a mile away.
