Full disclosure: I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Goodreads giveaway.

I enjoyed this book and intend to read the next one in the series.

The bad: The plot is slow and when exciting events happen, they are often variations on the same sort of attack. As a student, the protagonist, Rhenn, receives a lot of lectures about a lot of aspects of society, which is blatantly obvious info-dumping.

The good: Despite the above complaints, which might normally make me quit the rest of the series or even fail to finish the first one, I actually liked this. Modesitt sucked me in with the rich descriptions and a couple competent and opinionated female side characters (the protagonist's love interest, Seliora, and his sister, Khethila). The religion in this society is also fascinating and unique.
