The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks
by E. Lockhart
I'm so glad that I found this book and decided to read it when I did, because it very nearly went under my radar. It was just so...smart. Every time I opened this book I felt like I was being treated by something, like my intelligence was being respected. Here's why:
Frankie was such an utterly refreshing character. Unlike most of today's YA heroines, she didn't spend countless pages whining about her looks (or lack thereof), quite simply because, in this story, they didn't freaking matter. Again, having a story directed towards my age group about a girl who uses her intelligence and drive to get ahead was hugely refreshing.
I also liked how most of the female characters, for all their feminism and liberal thinking, were still allowed to be girly and have fun. I liked how the male characters were well-meaning but still let the age-old patriarchal mindset take over. Basically, I liked how all the characters were brilliantly flawed, but still, well, brilliant.
The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks is just a really smart, fun, well-written book. I'm definitely adding the author's other works to my to-read list now!
Also: the neglected positives thing? AWESOME.
