Rosa's Song by Helena Ku Rhee
3.0

This sweet, sad book celebrates immigrant children's new friendships and honors the challenges kids face when a new friend abruptly moves away. Rosa's abrupt departure is mentioned in the premise, but I didn't read the premise before reading the book, and I'm sure that many other readers will also be blindsided by it. In the author's note, Rhee reflects on how many of her childhood friendships abruptly ended due to a variety of different issues, and I can see what she was going for, but it just made the book seem sad to me.

Because of this element, I wouldn't recommend this book to someone who is trying to help their child prepare to make new friends after a move. It's good as a story and as an emotional learning opportunity, but I think it would be better to share it with kids who aren't in a similar situation, unless they are already processing a new friendship that has been abruptly cut off. Otherwise, I think it could create more anxiety about moving and trying to make new friends.

If someone is looking for a book to help their child process moving away from a friend (or vice versa), I would recommend [b:Evelyn del Rey Is Moving Away|51472369|Evelyn del Rey Is Moving Away|Meg Medina|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1582210466l/51472369._SX50_.jpg|76136877].
