City of Bones is a post-apocalyptic fantasy adventure, incorporating the mystery of ancient magic with the day-to-day struggle for survival. The setting isn't particularly innovative - there's a lot of similar worlds out there - but it is well-crafted and I enjoyed the process of discovering the different facets of the genre that were used here. The main character is a rogue who certainly has his flaws, but in general it was easy to empathize with him, and by the end he'd done a good amount of growing. There were parts of the plot that I felt were handled clumsily, such as Khat's feud with a broker he used to work for, but the main story is well written and moves along fairly smoothly. Overall it's a solid adventure that any fan of the genre is likely to enjoy.
