This books does a lot of things. It's a story about a new friendship, about establishing a social group, about body acceptance, the reality of popularity... and it's a romance. These ideas fit together well enough, but sometimes they get skimped on, or the transitions are rough.
Millie and Callie (the girls on the cover) are very different people, but both are at a time when their lives need to change, and the upheavals bring them together. They each have something to offer one another, but only if they can be open to it.
A cute, feel good story, with plenty of drama and some complex characters. Unlike in Dumplin', two teens get a POV, though there are some secondary characters I was curious to know more about. Maybe there will be a book 3.
