The Moor's Account by Laila Lalami

5.0

I am so glad this book had a happy ending. Otherwise, because of the horrors witnessed by the narrator that were part of 'conquering' the Americas, I would have just ended up with my faith in humanity being shattered.

The happy ending meant that the good and bad witnessed by and participated in by the narrator were justified. The extraordinairy tale of one man, who was largely ignored in the official reports because of his origins as a slave from Azamor, will show you another perspective of how the world works.

I really enjoyed how this book shows the effect of stories - even the title gives a hint of what is inside. Characters tell stories to comfort themselves and others, to trade for commodities, to impress imperial powers, to heal the sick. It shows how 'the winners write the history books', and what kind of effect that has on the world.
