Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor

3.0

This is decent series opener for an interesting story featuring angels and monsters. Karou is an unusual girl with blue hair, no past, and a passel of animal-looking friends behind a hidden portal into another world. She flies around the world, gathering teeth for the Wishmonger, Brimstone. What he does with them, she has no idea but she is starting to wonder about the tattoos she's always had on her hands and why she has no family or knowledge about her background. Enter a mysterious stranger and, of course, everything changes. The first and last thirds of the novel are the best parts but it sags a bit in the middle. The pacing of the action is a bit off but a very original plot and extensive world building make this pretty successful. Will get to the second in the trilogy at some point.
