This is teenage YA but with a nice plot and nice characters, so overall despite some of the usual YA faults it makes for an enjoyable read.

The good thing? The mythical creatures are not out in the open, not in all the book. There are lots of secrets and mysteries being toyed about and around but it is not focused on the mermaids per se. This is refreshing for me and quite novel among its YA book peers.

You have this normal kid that is going through a self discovery phase after her grandma died, and starts realizing that her mom used to be a very different person that she is now after they both get summoned into an island to sort through granny's house and legacy.

And well, in this island, legend says that the mer kind live together with the humans, and a very mysterious book, that I kept cursing at her to read it whole once and for all since the first time she reads a tiny little part, goes hinting at how to recognize them.

So, she may or may not be descended from mermaids, her love interest may or may not be one, the hints are there, you can believe it not but you will not see a tail, well, maybe only a flash of one.
