Rosaria Munda really knocked it out of the park with the first book of The Aurelian Cycle. The main Characters in this series are children of a Revolution that occurred approximately 10yrs prior to the setting of Fireborne. Annie (Fmc) and Lee (Mmc) are both dragon riders competing in the First Rider tournament. Majority of this book is structured around this tournament - and the importance of winning it. Not just to become First Rider but to also step into the leadership role for their continent. Rosaria uses the roles for each character to build the world of Callipolis - she explores economic standing, new vs old politics, and social structures. While I wish there was more detail / world building - the setting is well built and easily understood. I absolutely loved Annie’s character and her childhood BFF “first crush” romance with Lee. Their relationship is definitely relatable for a YA audience. One thing I would add to this story would be to add more personality to the Dragons. We do see a little bit, but it leaves me wanting more!
The ending is pretty surprising. Some of it I expected, but not all of it! I’m definitely excited to dive into book 2 (Flamefall)
