Lost in a Good Book
by Jasper Fforde
May 2021 Review
Dear past Kelly. Lost in a Good Book is clearly superior to The Eyre Affair. What a delight to reread and have been wrong.
*Past review*
I'm finding that these books always take around 100 pages to get started, but once they do, they're greatly enjoyable.
"Who would you prefer to sit next to?"
"Nun or a knitting granny, if that's possible."
"Hmm," mused the check-in girl, studying the passenger manifest carefully. "All the nuns, grannies and intelligent non-amorous males are taken. It's technobore, lawyer, self-pitying drunk or copiously vomiting baby, I'm afraid."
"Technobore and lawyer, then."
One of my favorite things about Thursday Next novels are how ordinary her life comes across most of the time. After becoming a semi celebrity, she's constantly bombarded to do PR work (that she studiously avoids). When she does go to give an interview, different powers at play prevent her from revealing any information whatsoever about the event she was a part of - the only topic of conversation left to her is her pet dodo. Thursday takes life by the horns and is not intimidated despite the threatening presences in her life. I love these books.. ONCE they get started!
