Stay Sexy & Don't Get Murdered: The Definitive How-To Guide by Georgia Hardstark, Karen Kilgariff

2.0

When I was first told, in the winter of 2017, by my dear friend Etienne about a "podcast" called My Favorite Murder, I was skeptical. Who wants to listen to people talking... for fun? I was totally against the idea of a podcast and curious as to how true crime and comedy could go together (this was before the days of Karen telling us to "Get the fuck out" and thankfully, I didn't). Not only did I fall head over heels with MFM, I fell in love with podcasts as a genre (though no show has quite captured me like MFM has (except maybe the Exactly Right shows Do You Need a Ride and This Podcast Will Kill You). I was excited to see the women who have become friends enter written word, though I admit my admiration of them may have blinded me to SSDGM: The Definitive How-To Guide's purpose.

For as much as I like reading (and writing) across genres, I'm not into self-help. I was expecting more memoir and less self-help and I got the opposite. While Karen and Georgia retain their same candor and voice in print as they do off the cuff, I found myself uninterested in what they were saying. I will absolutely buy and read their next book should they have it, and continue to buy my own shit (of theirs), but this one let me down.
