Passion Project by London Sperry
4.0
adventurous emotional hopeful reflective sad medium-paced

"Love doesn't care about whether or not you have your shit together, or if you're a grieving mess. Love doesn't care if you're anxious or depressed or drowning in everyday life. Love just loves."

Passion Project is a heartfelt, powerful debut that blends grief, healing, and new beginnings in the middle of a vibrant New York backdrop. I read it in a single day, completely swept up in Bennett and Henry’s story.

Bennett’s struggle with depression and loss felt raw and real and a little too close to home. She’s not always easy to root for, but that’s what makes her journey feel so authentic. Watching her slowly rediscover colour, meaning, and connection, especially through Henry’s unwavering kindness, was genuinely moving. Henry is the definition of golden retriever energy: sweet, patient, and impossibly thoughtful...and yes, the glasses and rock collection did make me melt a little!

Their “passion project” adventures are tender and filled with gentle humour. I loved how New York came alive around them. My only small critique is that the ending felt a little rushed after such a delicately paced story. Also, I didn't like how Bennett treated Henry at the wedding but I think that humanizes her more. Still, this is an impressive debut full of warmth, grief, awkwardness, and hope. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on whatever  London Sperry writes next! I think if you are a fan of Emily Henry, you'll enjoy this.
