Heir to Thorn and Flame by Ben Alderson

3.0

it was a light and fun read (despite some heavy matters being introduced, please check the trigger warnings), and i can't wait to see where the story goes in the sequel. i liked a lot of things about this book, but there were some moments where some plot elements stuck out to me.the characters were fine, and the main character was pretty reletable. small things like how he sneaks into the kingdom just to read gay smut, and such really made me happy. but some aspects of the plot and the characters we easy to guess. it is not necessarily a bad thing, but i do think that sometimes it gets boring. and some heavy topics that were introduced were not mentioned again, which was confusing.

and seeing it was an adult fantasy, i thought there would be more adult aspects, but there were very little. i had different expectations on that aspect, so that was a little disappointing initially, but then again, given the situations, i do understand why it wasn't a focus.

but all and all, i did have a lot of fun reading it. it was comfy to read. gave me the same feelings as the times i would read fantasy books in middle school, which is something i am trying to feel again as an adult.

##spoilers##

one thing that shocked me was beatrice's sudden alliance with camryn. it did surprise me. and camryn entered the scene there like a moustache-twirling villain.

from the moment max was taken in as julian, i could tell that he was going to end up with simion, so i just waited for camryn to reveal whatever bullshit he was trying to pull on max. simian, my beloved, he is just so cute.

and i really want to know what's going to happen with the bond and the phoenix deal cause i am still very confused about how camryn got possessed by one and what happened to him. cause of course his evaporation was too good to be true.
