2 stars because I’m being generous for its influence in the gothic genre and appreciative of the fact that it’s pioneering role in the exploration of the theme of duality would have been less predictable in its day. However, I have never been so bored reading a book- this took me months to slog through despite its short length. Something about it makes me feel as though it would work better as a play. I felt as though it was lacking the “life” needed in commentaries on human nature, perhaps this form would have humanised the characters in a way that better delivers the philosophical undertones of the story.
