Circling Back to You by Julie Tieu
4.0

This is the workplace rom-com that you should definitely watch out for!

Circling back to you is one of my most anticipated 2022 releases because:

1.) The male lead in this book is Filipino. Matt Escanilla, everyone;

2.) I have a background in data analytics which is Cadence Lim's job in this book; and

3.) I enjoyed the author's previous release, The Donut Trap, because Julie Tieu brings an exciting voice in adult romcom genre.

THOUGHTS
This book is a rollercoaster ride!

Though the premise revolves around the development of romance between officemates Cadence and Matt, this book also offers a discussion about family dynamics, filial piety, adult burnout, gender-bias in workplaces, and grief.

Cadence Lim is a force to be reckoned with. I love the way she thinks about her job, her connection with Matt, and her family. There's a sense of being proactive as I read her chapters and I really think we'll be great friends irl.

Though I can't completely vouch for Matt Escanilla and the Filipino-American representation in this book because I am not Fil-Am, I can say that the essence of being a Filipino is presented accurately especially in the handaan scenes and the way the Escanillas bonded throughout the book.

The romance is a bit safer than what I expected. There's a lot of potential to have this converted as a dangerous workplace romance but I still enjoyed the pining, the banter, the realization, and the turnout.

Another thing that I look for when I read adult novels is the depiction of personal dilemmas of the characters and Julie handled it great in this one. I like how Cadence and Matt managed things before the last page ended.

To cut things short, I recommend this one if you're looking for an exciting (and diverse) voice in adult romcom genre.

I don't want to include this one but maybe it'll help but if you enjoy The Hating Game, then you should definitely consider this one.

"Emotions didn't follow an "if x, then y" logic. They were immeasurable, amorphous. At times, insurmountable."
