It's strange to read Dune 50 years after it was written. So much of it is still wonderful, but it can be hard to distance yourself from the modern context when reading it. I think for many modern readers it would be hard to get over some of the bits that were inherent to cultural understanding in the 1970s: the myth of the 'noble savage,' but the rudimentary exploration of genetic heritage (before epigenetics was even described), and the strange mix of progressive and regressive view of women.  The visceral reaction to the word Jihad is different in a post-9/11 world. I think that the work stands the test of time because- the setting is still a masterwork. The themes of empire, conquest, duty, love and fate are all beautifully explored. It is a classic for a reason. It is really fun when some Mary Sue becomes the chosen one and he's like, nah bro.
