okokokokok WOW. This book just came RIGHT out of left field. I finished Rosewater and was swiping through the excerpts at the back and the synopsis of this one GRABBED ME. I have never heard a whisper of this book anywhere, but it follows an AUDITOR who audits crimes to find their judgement value in a near future dystopian society. So of course I'm like PUT IT IN MY EYEBALLS. I then proceeded to read it over the course of two days, and I AM SHOOK. Not only is Claire North's writing INCREDIBLE (and weird, and confusing, and stunning, and emotional), but this world could literally be our world if you follow the current economic system to it's inevitable conclusion. This book takes place in the UK so it's slightly different, but THE PARALLELS. And as if those things aren't enough, and I'm not crying/terrified/amused/interested/heartbroken already, add in a family saga, more societal commentary, thriller elements, trans rep, epic character development, I'm sure I'm missing stuff. I just really really loved this book. It meant alot to me. I will be gobbling up all of Claire North's stuff now, but man, I don't know how she could top Theo in my heart.
