A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift
4.5
dark funny fast-paced

Some works are exactly as long as they need to be while really getting the message across — I think is what has allowed Swift’s “A Model Proposal” to have survived the century.

It is shocking how relevant it still is while applying some absolutely dry and serious wit throughout — as Swift says:

Therefore let no man talk to me of other expedients: Of taxing our absentees at five shillings a pound: Of using neither clothes, nor houshold furniture, except what is of our own growth and manufacture: Of utterly rejecting the materials and instruments that promote foreign luxury

Clearly, eating the children of the poor was the only solution.
