The Wrath & the Dawn by Renée Ahdieh

5.0

The Wrath & The Dawn is a brilliant book ... to absolutely no ones surprise. There are books that are incredibly well written and capture you with amazing characters, a great plot, a fantastic world-building or relationships that make you super emotional ... and then there's The Wrath & The Dawn. It has everything I already mentioned and more. Renée Ahdieh manages to put a spell on you and makes you fall in love with her beautiful writing - and that's REALLY beautiful, I mean ... wow.

"Some things exist in our lives for but a brief moment. And we must let them go on to light another sky."

I would love to talk about the plot but I think you should experience this on your own. It's a retelling of A Thousand and One Nights and even though I've heard of it I had absolutely no clue what it was about. It was good because that way I was constantly surprised and tried to puzzle everything together - I failed miserably, by the way. This book is a freaking mystery! One moment you think you have things sorted out and know what's going on and in the next all your ideas and guesses are thrown overboard so you have to start from scratch! I LOVED IT. I did guess a few things but most of the time I was clueless, confused and while I believe my mind was rattling all the time it actually only screamed WHAT'S GOING ON?!?! Well.

Now my favorite part of the book - the characters. Before I start fangirling all over again and scream at you in capslock I just wanna say that Sharhzard and Khalid as well as everyone else were extremely well-written and fleshed out! They had depth to their character, different facades and made you feel all the things they felt. It's seriously amazing!

Beware of the capslock now because OH MY GOOOOOD! Khalid is bae and I was into him right from the beginning. I didn't believe that all the rumors where true and that he's the monster everyone thinks he is. Just nope. I have a thing for mysterious/broken guys anyway, so obviously he was right up my alley. Also, don't even get me started on Sharhzard because she was freaking awesome too - such a strong and defiant girl that isn't afraid of fighting her own battles. She doesn't need a man to protect her, she knows how to kick ass and that's what I loved so much about her!

"It's inevitable. When you meet the one who makes you smile as you've never smiled before, cry as you've never cried before... there is nothing to do but fall."

And what about their relationship, you ask me? HOOOOLY SMOKES!!! I'M OBSESSED, REALLY. No insta love. It's slow-burn and even though there's so much we don't understand at the beginning it makes perfectly sense. Trust me. I keep fangirling about these two so hard and couldn't even contain my excitement when they're in a scene together like HOOOOW?!?! They complement each other so perfectly and bring out different sides of the other ... they're such passionate characters and how conflicted they both were because of their feelings ... oh god. I love this. So much. SHIP, SHIP, SHIP!!!

The story/metaphor of the Mountain of Adamant is probably one of my favorites. The references to Khalid and Sharhzard are AMAZING and I cannot stop thinking about this! Like ... the mountain has so much power that everything around him is pulled towards it - once it has you in its grip, it's too late and in spite of all your efforts to get away, you just can't. You drift closer and closer, faster and faster and when you finally let go and give in you break apart and collapse and everything will be unraveled and uncovered. HOLY SHIIIIT!

"I love you, a thousand times over. And I will never apologize for it."

The Wrath & The Dawn is a book that you cannot and do not want to put out of your hands. I wanted to read this far into the night which hasn't happened in SO LONG - this already should tell you how brilliant it is. It's definitely one of my favorite reads of 2016 and I can recommend this 1001%. Believe me, it totally lives up to all the hype it receives - you won't be disappointed!
