Winter's Eve: Then, Now, & Always
by A.E. Valdez
A.E. Valdez does not miss! Her books have been on my TBR list for a while, and I’m honestly mad at myself for not picking them up sooner. That being said, I’ve now read her entire collection and am now waiting for her February 2025 release.
Winter’s Eve is a powerful exploration of grief and healing. It dives into how debilitating grief can be—not just for the person experiencing it, but for the loved ones around them. But what really stood out to me was how the story shows that healing is possible and that forgiveness and love can help two souls find their way back to each other.
One thing I absolutely love about A.E. Valdez’s writing is how all of her characters represent Black excellence. There’s always a strong focus on family, community, and the importance of having a support system. In this book, therapy is also given a spotlight, showing how it can be a vital part of the healing process.
Winter, in particular, was such a great character. Even through all the loss, he still maintained that playful, unserious side that made me absolutely love him. The banter between him and his brothers had me laughing out loud—seriously, the King family dynamic is everything. I can’t wait to see more of them in North’s story!
If you haven’t picked up A.E. Valdez’s books yet, do yourself a favor and start now. I’m hooked! ✨
