The Ersatz Elevator by Lemony Snicket

5.0

Updated review: June 2018:

I think this is actually my favourite story so far in the series. The plot expands, dropping some of the same-same story that is in the first five books. There's some mystery that is brought up, and some puzzles the Baudelaires have to figure out to be able to try and defeat Olaf.

Review September 2015:
This book starts to mark a turning point for the series, but within that it is still largely more of the same - another guardian, another plot from Olaf. But it is expanding, and links are starting to appear - a passage between Dark Avenue and
the Baudelaire mansion
, and a link between the mysterious Beatrice and Esmé Squalor.

The series is starting to show its depth and magnitude - VFD, the Baudelaires, Beatrice, Lemony Snicket, all appear to be small specks in the same map. We just haven't yet worked out the distance between them, or indeed what exactly the map shows.
