The House of My Mother by Shari Franke
4.0

I blew past this book— basically read it in a single sitting. Fast-paced, emotional, and harrowing, Shari Franke recounts her childhood living under an abusive household while simultaneously being broadcasted on her mother’s YouTube channel. I’ve been familiar with the 8 Passengers news for several years now, but Shari provides a deeply personal look of what really went on behind the scenes and how she overcame such horrifying circumstances.

I really respect her choice to omit her younger siblings in this book in order to preserve their autonomy, and give them the chance to decide if and when they want to share their own stories. I admire the bravery Shari showcases in writing this memoir, and the strength it took to reclaim her own narrative after being subject of intense public speculation over the years.
