This book was fast paced and often fun to read, but the author seemed like an unreliable narrator with a huge ego. He seemed to relish in the idea that he was a “good guy psychopath” obsessed with this case at the expense of his own family and life. He also constantly cast suspicion on the family for not being eager to participate in his research, but then made pretty flagrant accusations against that family. Most egregiously, he suggested that the father sexually molested his own missing daughter over transgressions such as sharing a hotel room or being an overly involved running coach. I agreed that some of the family’s actions seemed suspicious, but I couldn’t trust that the author was sharing an unbiased opinion on the case, especially when you mix in his open addiction to alcohol which he explores in the novel. It’s really not a bad book, I just worry how reading it would effect someone close to the case and I really dislike Mr. Renner who seems to think he knows more than anyone when it comes to this case, including the police, investigators, and family of Maura. I like the writing style, so maybe one of his fiction novels would be more my taste. At least then I would know he wasn’t potentially hurting real people.
