Night Meets the Elf Queen by J.M. Kearl
adventurous
funny
medium-paced
3.5
I finished the final installment of this book and I would rate this 3/5 ⭐️ 1/5 🌶️
This book has elements of action, adventure, fantasy, and romance. And overall I did like how this series ended. I gave it 4/5 ⭐️. I didn’t particularly like the pacing of this book. Some side plots took up a chunk of chapters and I feel like the true meat and potatoes of the main plots were rushed and anticlimactic. Now onto spoilers for a more in depth review….
*****Spoilers Ahead*****
Starting off, there was some romance and loving moments between Val & Hel and Thane & Katana, but these books are very mild. I enjoyed the tension between Val and Hel and seeing their relationship bloom even more.
The nice thing about this book is there aren’t a lot of new characters or locations so following along through the different plots and POVs was very simple.
I did like the plot of Thane and Katana, but I can see why others may feel like it was rushed. I was also so disappointed that Thane stepped in as a knight in shining armor and killed Atlanta. The whole story Katana is this fragile, nonconfrontational, battered woman who is supposed to be a badass, powerful primordial and I was really hoping she would finally rise up and kill her abuser, but a man swoops in to save the day. In the end she does help Valeen to destroy their enemies.
I think my favorite relationship in this book was Hel and War. Their brotherly banter was enjoyable and added a light hearted and sarcastic touch to the tension leading up to the final battles.
Once I finally got to the final battles I felt the scenes were anticlimactic. Priscilla is head of the council and can’t fight? Once they become face to face she just cowers. Also the final scene with Val and Synick was interesting. We have a God who taught Hel and War everything they know and he goes down by becoming distracted by making a kiss face?? And we can’t forget Hel’s and War’s parents coming to the rescue. While I liked the elements of Val’s and Hel’s people coming to fight after thousands of years, the whole thing seemed awkward and out of place.
Overall I did enjoy the story. It was nice to read a happy ending for a badass FMC that didn’t fall into the trope of sacrificing all of her powers for everyone else. Val got her immortality back and got everything else she always wanted.
