DETRANSITION, BABY by TORREY PETERS
A novel that takes on what it means to be a trans woman today.
And the great thing is that this book isn’t just educational, it’s also massively entertaining and funny and has a huge heart.
The characters currently live rent free in my head and I’m in no hurry for them to leave.
I must note that it is a novel about white trans women and that is an important distinction to make; one that the writer herself points out. The experiences are not the same. Yes, white trans women are subject to verbal and physical abuse, but that does not include racism. I will now be seeking out novels that show different points of view - the TV show Pose was excellent, but books are better than TV.
Anyway, back to this one. It took me a very long time to read this, even though it was beautifully written. I think it was because I wanted to take in every single word in a really meaningful way; to respect Peters in the way she deserves. This made it impossible to binge, instead, I found myself reading small chunks, then processing for the rest of that day. I had so many thoughts while reading this book and I wish I’d made notes as I was reading, but I always forget how bad my memory is... well, I would, wouldn’t I?!
I haven’t read them all but this might be my favourite for the @womensprize so far.
I don’t wanna give the haters too much air time, but I I’ll say that this book is eligible for the @womensprize and anyone who says otherwise is a fool and needs to go to bed without supper and have a think about what they’ve said.
Love you @torreyadora - please write another book soon!
