The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

4.0

I read this book as a result of hearing the author interviewed on either the Guardian Books podcast or a Radio 4 podcast.
My first thought - one that was alluded to by the author in the aforementioned interview, was that the central character in the book was basically Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory. Of course, once I was a couple of chapters in I realised that this is not the case, but the way the character behaves is a bit like what Sheldon was before he became a massive cariacature.
The book is set from the point of view of an Aspergic who is looking for a wife. As such, we see inside the mind of someone who thinks in a very different way to the way we do, and whilst you do initially find yourself laughing at him (he has the same meal on the same night every week, for example) soon you are empathising with him.
The book is about the nature of love, and makes the point very well without ever getting slushy. You are rooting for Don, the main character, to get his girl, although you are by no means certain that he will.
It's funny, it's quite thought provoking and also it's not all that long. Apparently this is Graeme Simsion's first novel, I shall await his second with interest.
