In Australia, this was packaged and sold as a straight-up serial killer thriller. But it's not! This is romantic suspense through and through, except with nastier violence, such as women's nipples being cut off! Ouch.

Jess Harris is on the trail of The Player, a serial killer who has one of her friends in his clutches! He's also kidnapping and murdering anybody even closely linked to Jess. But I didn't hold out much hope for Jess solving the case, because too much of her attention is bound up with Dan Burnett, the police chief, who just happens to be her former lover! Seriously, Jess should be more worried about the serial killer than a twenty-year-old failed relationship! And if she hates her high heels so much, she should stop wearing them!

I got annoyed. I wanted to read about the capture of a serial killer, and didn't appreciate that so many people died because Jess was too busy bickering with Dan about their relationship!
