Clara by Kurt Palka
3.0
Clara and Vienna Nocturne were just two books I happened to be reading that took place at Vienna. However, that is where most of the similarities end. Clara takes place in a world where socialism, nationalism, and communism are very near and real. In a world where everyone has different ideas about how it should be governed. Clara is set in Vienna just before the outbreak of World War II.
Clara Herzog is a student at Vienna University and is taught by teachers like the esteemed Sigmund Freud. Clara is truly living in a decade where she is exposed to many ways of thinking.
During this time Clara also meets Albert Leonhardt. Clara is absolutely confident about Albert from the start and thinks the world of him even when others, like her family, doesn't.
Clara eventually ends up married to Albert and the story is told in two parallel timelines: one is the present where Albert is dead and Clara is reminiscing about her life back then and the other is that actual past.
There were many historical moments noted in the story and it was nice to see those moments told with a personal touch instead of from a textbook. The atrocities seemed to be made worse because of the personal connection.
The story was good and the plot was interesting but it often moved too slowly at parts.
