Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

5.0

I am done reading this book and I have zero complains on it.
The feelings of rejection from one's parents, of friendship and love between cousins, loss of a loved one, a budding crush and heartbreak and bittersweet burn of love and betrayal from a close person was so strongly conveyed by Aiden through our protagonist Yadriel.

I might not be Latina but I myself as a brown person with latina friends do understand how overwhelming and dotting multi-generational brown families are,and I am so thankful that a lot of light was thrown into this and that fact that there's literally zero privacy in brown families for children.

The struggle of a newly come-out trans teen, after losing his mother, one of the fewest people who supported him and loved him without bounds for whoever he was unlike so many others.
The emotional scenes of being indirectly judged from his traditional latinx family, the joy of finally starting to feel more or do things according to his gender without the fear or care of judgment after being encouraged by Julian are so finely written that I wanted to close the book and cry for hours until I myself could feel okay again.

The connection between him and Maritza was so awesomely written. As a person with great relationship with my sister and most of my cousins,I quite enjoy seeing such relationships depicted in a positive manner and this part of the book gave me Serotonin too.

I wanna talk about the way culture was written by Aiden for a moment. He wrote so many Spanish sentences that weren't translated and for me it felt as an impersonal gift to his latina readers and even though I had to Google translate them I felt really happy for this. (Especially the last part where Julian starts speaking Spanish).
The way the wrote about (again) latina families, their bonds, their food, music, festivals, Goddesses and Gods. The adoring thoughts that came to Yadriel's mind when he thought of seeing his mother on "Día de los Muertos" was so amazingly written.

The acception of Yadriel in his community,by his people,by his own father. So freaking tear inducing.

The love between Yads and Jules. Gosh I wish,I wish we had more scenes of them loving each other so fiercely and unconditionally.

I can't speak enough about this book and how much I loved this book and how many times I am gonna read this again.

Would recommend this to everyone honestly.
