Zak George's Dog Training Revolution: The Complete Guide to Raising the Perfect Pet with Love
by Dina Roth Port, Zak George
This is an amazing book written by a wonderful person. I highly suggest you check out Zak George's youtube channel if you have a dog. I recently adopted a chihuahua/ papillon mix from my local shelter, and Zak George has literally saved me so much time and stress. He has videos that show you step-by-step how to train your dog in a COMPASSIONATE way that works. My family has always had chihuahuas, and I honestly never thought I would adopt one for myself because my family never trained theirs. The dogs would pee everywhere, bark at everything, and destroy anything they could get to. They didn't know any basic commands. It really turned me off from the breed, but Zak was George was able to save the day.
He is so passionate about helping dogs and people. There are terrible breed stereotypes that really harm dogs and how people train/ treat them, and Zak Makes it clear that EVERY dog is trainable and worth love. In ONE training session I was able to train my chihuahua to sit! A breed that is known for not being smart/ untrainable! My dog learned it so fast and continues to learn other more complex tricks.
Zak George shows you how to teach your dog something and have the dog think for themselves. With this method, the dog is actually learning something instead of behaving a certain way due to fear. Zak George is against using methods that cause a dog harm or makes them uncomfortable, as it damages the trust between your dog and you.
My favorite thing I learned from this book is that you can use play as a reward. My dog loves treats, but he goes wild over a game of tug of war or fetch. By knowing what my dog values, I am able to reward him in ways that he really cares about and enjoys. It encourages him to learn more and keeps his focus on what we are doing because he is having fun.
