Cami now has a special place in my heart.
We first met Cami in [b:The Puck Drop|58432423|The Puck Drop (Central State, #1)|Jaqueline Snowe|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1628656102l/58432423._SY75_.jpg|91695232] as Naomi's twin sister. While Naomi is a serious bookworm who prefers lowkey outings or hanging out with her best friends, Cami is the wild, fun-loving sister who enjoys attention. I'll be honest. I wasn't drawn to Cami when we first met her in that book. I could feel that she cared about her sister and that the deterioration of her relationship with Naomi was painful for her, especially when she would call her Nana, but I also didn't understand how a sister couldn't realize that her sister was dating someone and then go out with him themselves. Okay, maybe one guy I could understand but three!!
We also met Freddie in [b:The Puck Drop|58432423|The Puck Drop (Central State, #1)|Jaqueline Snowe|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1628656102l/58432423._SY75_.jpg|91695232] and we saw that he was a *bit intense when it came to studying. After then reading [b:Holdout|56574147|Holdout (Moo U, #4)|Jaqueline Snowe|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1609945050l/56574147._SY75_.jpg|87496607], and getting to know Jonah a bit more, I think Michael is a magnet for these types of intense personalities.
Let's look at the characters. We have your nerdy bookworm who happens to be a tall, fit (yet not overly muscular) giant that is described repeatedly as Clark Kent. I've seen Superman in its multiple versions. Keep the blue spandex and red briefs for yourself; I'll take Clark and his thick black-framed glasses any day. Freddie is described as an introvert; it's hard for him to make friends, and he is very disciplined in his routines. He gets along well with his former roommate, Michael, and Naomi, Michael's girlfriend. However, there was some miscommunication with Cami the previous school year and now he avoids her, even though he is extremely attracted to her.
Cami...this poor misunderstood woman wears her attitude and ice queen façade like armor. She puts on a show for everyone to avoid pain and heartache, but the character that she plays only causes her more loneliness. She is passionate about dance and is a smart person, but because superficial people don't believe that beauty can have brains, she portrays the image of a dumb, sexy vixen and allows everyone to believe rumors and their assumptions that she is easy. This persona she created ends up costing her to achieve some of her dreams but instead of wallowing, Cami self-sabatoges. This leaves her in an endless cycle of doubting her self-worth.
Fate puts Cami and Freddie in each other's path, and they each take the time to get to know each other. Freddie decides to stop listening to the rumors and taking Cami at face value, and Cami decides to stop pushing Freddie's buttons and let herself be vulnerable with him. They eventually build a friendship that turns into more but they each have self-confidence issues that they need to work through to actually be together.
I have to say that the spice scenes were entertaining. Freddie may be a friendly giant who is shy around women and is an introvert, and he may have had spark-free sex with his ex-girlfriend, but the chemistry with Cami is sizzling. I must also admit that I was slightly shocked at how kinky Freddie is when he is turned on and what a dirty mouth he has on him. Clark Kent, look at you being all sexy. I didn't think you had it in you.
I found the story entertaining. As I've said before, I enjoy Jaqueline's books, and going back to read some of her earlier work makes me appreciate how she has grown as an author.
