Some of the saddest, neediest and most brutally self-revealing characters I've yet encountered in fiction, and some of the most angry and violent fucking I've read since... I don't know when. Even the pathetic little maybe happy outcomes for one or two of these people are pretty bleak. So it's almost a parody of High Romantic lit. All that's missing is some gnashing teeth and maybe a ghost!
