Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books by Kirsten Miller
5.0
This is my second Kirsten Miller book and I am now officially a devotee!
Whip-smart and sardonically funny, _Lula Dean's Little Library_ reveals the chaos that unravels when an uptight, approval-starved resident of a small town in Georgia convinces residents that there's danger in them-thar books after a teen prank leads to the discovery of a dirty cake cookbook on the public library's shelf. As head of the self-created Concerned Parents Committee (CPC), Lula leads the town in stripping boxes of books from the shelves of the public and school libraries. As a show of her benevolence and morality, Lula creates a Little Library on her property, which she stocks with titles that support the desired "wholesome" lifestyles and "good Southern values" the upright townspeople of the CPC want to embrace.
But unbeknownst to Lula or her followers, someone has switched out the books in Lula's library, and the titles that ACTUALLY lie beneath the saccharine book jackets are the kick-in-the-pants that some residents need to feel there might just be hope after all for the town they feared was stuck forever in the thoughts of the past.
Add to a Little Library of banned books a confederate statue in the town square, a couple of white supremacists, a surprising revelation by a DNA test and ancestry website, a gay black valedictorian, a drag queen, a visit from a hometown-boy-turned-Hollywood superstar, and a vacancy for the mayor's seat that turns into a campaign for the moral fiber of the town, and you're in for a fantastic ride!
