Touch of Steel
by Kate Cross
I wasn't sure that I would like this one considering I could not get through the first book in the series, [b:Heart of Brass|12004775|Heart of Brass (Clockwork Agents, #1)|Kate Cross|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1358444893s/12004775.jpg|16969390], but who doesn't like a fake engagement plot?
In Touch of Steel Claire Brooks has gotten herself captured by the Wardens, a shadowy organization that protects England. Claire was part of the American rival faction, the Company; however, since her brother was killed she has vowed revenge on those responsible. Disavowing her allegiance to the company, Claire agrees to help the Wardens to track down two suspects that they are eager to apprehend. Claire agrees to be partnered with, Alistair Payne, a Warden agent who has no respect for the beautiful spy that has betrayed her organization.
As the pair work together, they learn more about each other, realizing that they companies they work for are not so black and white and that they aren't so different after all.
I liked this on a lot more than the first in the series. For Heart of Brass I just couldn't get passed the premise where the characters were a separated married couple, where Luke, whose memory was wiped, was sent to kill his wife, Arden. I couldn't get into the plot and didn't like how Luke was cheating on his wife (I know, I know, he had amnesia! - but this is a book, so I get to be hard on the characters!).
I liked the characters in this one so much more. Alistair and Claire both had their own baggage, but I liked how they helped each other through it. They're relationship developed at a more moderate pace (compared to other romances) but it was well done by the end. Here's hoping the next one's just as good.
