Same As It Ever Was
by Claire Lombardo
Oof. I loved Lombardo’s debut novel but this was a depressing slog. I think it would have been more effective to establish the protagonist’s backstory much earlier in the story to make her more endearing. I don’t need to like characters but I do need to be able to spend time with them and I just couldn’t stand her most of the time. Yes, motherhood can be so hard and lonely, especially when our own mothers fell short. But come on!
Also could have cut out at least 100 pages. Still, she is a strong writer and I am hopeful her next book will improve upon this one.
