Nicholas by René Goscinny

funny lighthearted medium-paced

4.5

I honestly shouldn't have enjoyed this book as much as I did. It was lame and cliché and possibly downright insulting at times but it was doing it on purpose and that's what was so funny about it. The prose was simple and childish, as if it were being told by a small boy in the 1950s—which, of course, was perfect because that was the point. Nicholas repeated things over and over (like the part about Cuthbert and not being able to wack him because of his glasses), and sometimes acted downright annoying, and I'm not even sure if I liked him but boy he makes for a great character.
It's one of those books you can either cringe at and throw out after the first story or stifle your internal editor and enjoy with a perpetual smile. I chose the latter, and I'm quite glad.
