Big Chief
by Jon Hickey
An enjoyable three-star read about power, identity, and the struggle to belong. Mitch Caddo, a young Anishinaabe lawyer, returns to his home community to support his childhood friend, Mack Beck, in a high-stakes re-election campaign as Tribal President of the Passage Rouge Nation. As political tensions rise, a tragic accident, rising protests, and deep-rooted family conflicts push Mitch into the heart of a battle for power, land, and legacy.
I appreciated learning more about Tribal politics and the complexity of leadership within the community. The sense of disconnection many characters felt—between past and present, personal desires and cultural expectations—was palpable. The story also portrayed the power of protest with nuance and weight. A solid, thought-provoking read that explores what it means to belong.
