Marking Time
by Elizabeth Jane Howard
Oh god, I love these books so much... they are filled with such perfect detail and feeling, and each of the characters feels like a real person who might step off the page, and keeps living on even after I close the book.
I like the extensive sections of Polly, Louise, and Clary, but I will admit the smaller choppier bits from the perspectives of the whole family, their staff, and their friends, are my favorite. I like dipping in and out of all these points of view. The war is so omnipresent, and yet life goes on, and you really feel the weary press of time on every page.
I feel like I should say more, but I'm just astonishingly in love with these books and I can't wait to read more.
