The Mother of Black Hollywood: A Memoir by Jenifer Lewis

5.0

Let me start by saying that Ms. Lewis is hilarious. The way she's able to use comedy to explore the challenges of her life is impressive. This book covers her journey of self reflection and healing as she juggles her career and family while battling bipolar disorder.

About 5 years ago or so, I'd seen the segment of her on Oprah where she discussed coming to terms with having the mental health disorder. I remember being so impressed with her openness and honestly. It was amazing to see that a woman in the black community could be this open about such a topic.

This book expands on that interview, celebrates her successes, offers opportunities for others to learn from her lows, while also reducing stigma around mental health disorders and their various methods of treatment. I highly recommend giving this a read or listen. It is truly life changing.
