maryk8 's review for:
Clark and Division
by Naomi Hirahara
I read this book because it was a "one book" for a local library. After reading I decided that there wasn't enough about it that I wanted to discuss with a new book group over zoom. However, I do think that the book does offer many issues for a book discussion including the treatment of immigrants, the treatment of people of color, how people who are American citizens get treated during wartime because of their ancestry, the effects of trauma on a family, and the options women have when abortion is illegal.
Some of those issues are very topical right now. Women's reproductive rights are currently being challenged and this book gives insight into the challenges women faced when abortion was illegal. Also, Aki's family was deposited in Chicago and forced to make a new life for themselves in much the same way that current immigrants are being bussed to the Chicago area from Texas.
The book does a good job of educating people about the treatment of Japanese people in America, including many that were American citizens, during WWII. Being from the Chicago area, I found the many references to places in Chicago added some fun to reading this book. However, although the story was interesting and well paced, and logical, I didn't really develop an attachment to any of the characters, which is the main reason for giving is 3 rather than 4 stars.
