The first half of the book is quite interesting and intriguing. But right around the 300 page mark, the quality of the plot starts to deteriorate. Somehow the final plot twist did not deliver anything material to the story. You’re left wanting for more only because the build up was fun.
The main character, Jason, goes through different worlds again and again to reunite with his family. And that yearning is sincere and comes across very well in the writing. However, Blake Crouch, doesn’t quite do justice to his character. The last 100 pages or so had more versions of Jason enter the story but that plot twist was so unnecessary. We didn’t need multiple versions of the same person, we needed a detailed plot with Jason2. Even the ending needed work in terms of what world does Charlie choose, because if his genius father kept choosing terrible worlds, how’s he expecting his son to do anything right with his limited ability.
