My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh
1.0

Not to be an absolute hater but… wow.

I have a really bad habit of giving up on books I don’t like (without giving them the chance to redeem themselves) and I’m sure it has led me to miss out on some literary surprises and pleasures. So I really tried to push through with this books but half way through I simply cannot go on. I love myself too much to subject myself to a book that annoys me as much as this one.

The plot seems to be going absolutely nowhere, and I’ve been depressed!! I get that. I know how it works. But you know what book (this is bad to admit) did this better? Fucking New Moon by Stephanie Meyer where she just had all the months pass by blankly. I wish Moshfegh had given us that mercy. Instead, she subjects us to pages and pages and pages of a woman sleeping, being an absolutely horrific/selfish/cruel friend, and periodically stopping to appreciate how hot and rich she is.

I simply could not finish this book. There are so many good and sweet things in the world. Not just limited to rich stories and nuanced plot lines and characters. But also pretty skies and twisted old trees and playing children. All of these things are insurmountably more enjoyable than this book but that much is obvious so now I will list some other things that are more valuable and worthwhile than this book:
1) flipping over your mattress
2) going through the condiments in your fridge to organize and cull them
3) reading the email newsletter from the store you bought jeans at 3 years ago
4) unsubscribing from the email newsletters from that store
5) pushing back your cuticles
6) fishing hair out from your shower drain
7) spending 45 minutes online looking at various drain covers to catch your hair in the shower before it clogs things up
8) staring blankly at the ceiling wondering how adulthood, rather than being full of endless possibilities and eating cake and ice cream for dinner, is really more about finding drain covers for your shower

I could go on. tl;dr could not finish this book it was unbearably insufferable
