The story is set around a small local Renaissance Festival, modelled after the Maryland Renaissance Festival. Emily is painfully clueless about Renaissance Festivals going in and does not look anything up or ask her niece. The author clearly knows her stuff, from Faire-accurate foods to "boots before bodice" garb protocol.
There's a little flirting with the himbo gym teacher, but no threat of love triangle emerges. Emily has little self confidence and no future planned beyond the summer. Simon is grumpy and obsessed with maintaining the perfect Faire. Their characters are more relaxed and confident, pulling them into a fragile relationship.
Content Warning: Harry Potter references when they're trying to learn the accent for faire.
