I was pleasantly surprised as this book far exceeded any expectations I had. I like the description of the magic/necromancy. It was interesting and original, especially when we see Sairis’s skills in action. I don’t love the political maneuvering stuff quite as much, but it wasn’t unbearable. I also really like the chemistry and interactions between Sairis and Roland. They had great chemistry together and both characters were enchanting (pun intended) and delightful. I can’t say I loved the ‘sworn enemies’ thing, but I guess they had to start somewhere. I knew going in that this book was only the first part of a trilogy and would likely end rather abruptly, but did not expect that kind of cliffhanger. I was a bit lost as to the reasoning for Sairis’s actions and dread reading about Roland’s reaction, but I’m hoping it will be resolved fairly quickly in the next installment and won't become a long and drawn out conflict. There are much bigger issues to be dealt with!
