The true monster was society and how it treated Erik. Which could be an unpopular opinion. Christine might have seemed annoying but once Erik talked about how he was going to die, it clicked. He was a tortured soul who took it out on people who he perceived would have treated him as a monster. His love for Christine comes from her empathy and how she treats him as a person instead of a ghost is seen as.
