The Tenth Girl
by Sara Faring
Sometimes you listen to the first 12 hours of a book and think, "Can't wait for this to be over and for me to completely dispose of this memory," and then in the last 3 hours you are thrown one of the laziest and most out-of-left-field plot twists that you can't help watch the seconds tick down until you can finally move on.
This story started out with a compelling concept of a secluded school with a mysterious tenth girl (not to be mixed up with the ten students or maybe? Idk) with cultural immersion potential in the form of a fictional Zapchue tribe, but nothing was actually really explored? And after 15 hours I can't say I give a hoot about any of these characters, their world, their struggles, any of it. The horror of everything was bland and used for shock-value, and the plot twist voids the entire 12+ hours spent on a narrative that you hoped would add up to something more. And when a writing style is so poetic and verbose that you can't even remember what the point of the actual narrative is, you're left wondering whether you should just drop it, even right before the climax of the story, or even in the climax of the story, or even in the last 30 mins...
